Empty Nest Discovery #36: This Here Guitar's Not Going To Play Itself

Guitar #1, originally uploaded by grange85.
I haven't played guitar in 10 years. Every now and then, I feel something that I can't articulate with words alone and I want to pick up my guitar, but it's been so long, and I'm so out of practice, I know I wouldn't be able to make it say what I'm feeling, so I leave it sit.

Recently, I took my guitar out and set it up in the middle of my living room so that I would have to look at it every day. The hope was that I would eventually pick it up and play it.

Today I did. From the sounds I made, you wouldn't have guessed that I ever played. It was horribly frustrating. The feelings I want to express are so much more sophisticated than my guitar-playing ability (if we can call it that). Looks like me and that guitar are going to have to get reacquainted.

A few years back I bought my son a beautiful guitar and it is a thing of beauty when he plays it. Last night I asked him to bring it to Thanksgiving dinner so that I can hear him play again - I don't think I've heard him play since he left for college 2.5 years ago. Looking forward to Thanksgiving dinner with him and his girlfriend. Hugs to you.

I am an accomplished musician and I too have trouble with this. I'm going through it now. I always seem to let life get in the way of life if that makes sense. I let things get in the way of practicing that aren't nearly as gratifying more important than that which I love. I'm glad I read this because it reminds me of something I need to do, play my guitar/

I love to crochet and do it in the winter. Moving the basket next to the couch increased my guilt at not doing it..,not my productivity! Lol
